You Can’t Play Fast Forever… At Least, I Can’t.
The Resolution Point Matrix spawned during a time I was experiencing extreme physical pain on the bass.
This was several years ago.
During that time of my career, as a freelance bass player, I had been exclusively playing Jazz-Fusion gigs that deeply demanded for my chops.
Each song lasted more than 10 minutes and required me to endlessly fire sixteenth notes like a machine gun!
I was doing fine, but after years of playing every night, breathing stinky-unclean air, eating like crap, and adopting a terrible sleep schedule, I ended up developing a bad case of Tendonitis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, that left my plucking hand weak in strength, lacking in endurance, and difficult to control.
I went from being able to walk a bass line to Rhythm Changes, with the half-note beating at 180 bpm, for an entire night, to barely being able to play the same bass line for 2 measures, with the half-note beating at 60 bpm!
That experience pretty much ended my pursuit to make my living playing Jazz-Fusion gigs.
After months of sitting at home, being tired of feeling depressed and crippled, I began to come up with ideas of how I can still play music with a busted hand.
I actually considered picking up and learning a horn instrument. Anyway, I really did not want to give up playing the bass, even though my doctors advised me not to play the bass again.
I also didn’t want to give up on playing music that evoked the excitement and intensity I experienced when I played Jazz-Fusion.
So, I obsessively began to study musicians that demonstrated emotional intensity with their music, without playing fast.
No matter what style of music… No matter the instrument being played…. RHYTHM was the underlying factor that created intensity in their music!
Where these musician’s started and ended their phrases made all the difference.
This basic understanding has allowed me to be able to maintain intensity in my grooves and bass solos without physically taxing my hands from playing fast.
Face it… You can’t play fast forever… I certainly am not able to.
Like any machine, your body is subject to wear and tear.
Even a light bulb, that uses little energy, will burn out after so many flicks of the switch!

- Does your groove propel your audience regardless of tempo or speed?
- Do your solos sound interesting with just a few notes?
- Are you able to reach an intense climax with your music, without playing fast?
